Today I’m testing out a random AI home decor phone app that I saw in an advertisement to see if it can do what it says it can do — transform my living room into a dozen different design styles to choose from. I can’t code or use fancy programs, so it has to be simple and beginner friendly!

Here is how our main living space looks now. It’s fine, I like it, but it is a little plain and could definitely use some more layering.
I downloaded the DecAI phone app (not sponsored) and paid $6 for week subscription, which is the basic plan. My first impression was that it was easy to use and intuitive. All you need is a photo of your space. I’ll show you the results first and then exactly how to use the app at the end.

The styles are all so different for each photo! And even if it’s not specifically my style or I don’t like every single thing in the photo — they each seem to offer at least one idea I hadn’t thought of. There were different layouts, curtains, plants, floor types, color … Some of the photos were a little AI glitchy or didn’t understand the scale of the room, but overall I think it’s such a useful tool to visualize new ideas. The possibilities are absolutely endless!

Here’s a reminder of what the space originally looks like.

Biophilic, structured mode, imagined a sliding door where the wainscoting is in the entry, but I love all the wood tones and how the warm up the space. I’m having a hard time keeping the plants alive I already have with our new windows, so probably can’t add to many more!

Biophilic, renovation mode, added shelves and lighting on the entry wall. I love it! I also love the sectional facing the other way, toward the kitchen. I don’t know where the tv would go, but I’m sure it would open up the space dramatically. Again, I love the wood tones we are lacking now.

Boho also has another imagined door, but isn’t it amazing how different one room can look?

I took the last rendering and used the “item replace” tool to add a fireplace and bookshelves. I love them! It has the option to add an inspiration photo, but the fireplace didn’t look anything like the photo I added. Oh well, it’s still so fun to see. I want to keep playing with this one to fix the non-existent door and art.

Coastal feels a bit contrived to me, but look at the idea on the entryway wall here. I NEVER would have thought to do something like that. I don’t think we have the space structurally for cabinets and a shelf, but the idea is great.

Cozy, structured mode, is probably my favorite. I would like to go back and tweak some things, but look at the black doors with black light fixture. And that door to the bedroom is a beautiful idea! It’s to a bedroom, so maybe you’d want to frost it or use some effect, but now after this app I see the potential to do something a little different there. I also like the entryway shelves. And how the console under the tv matches the cabinet on the far right. Oh! And the layered rugs is a nice touch.

I did not care for vintage ;)

Modern is not my style, per se, but I like seeing different options like the curtains and cabinets in the entryway.

Just for fun, here is another angle of the room.

How to use DecAI phone app

- Chose on the home screen whether you would like to redesign an interior or exterior space.

2. Select your photo.

3. Select which type of room you are designing.

4. Select a style type. There are 30 to choose from, but a few are really out there like Cyber Punk or Baroque. They’re fun though!

5. Select a renovation mode and color palette. You can choose whether you would like to follow your room structure closely or renovate more freely. I liked trying both for each style for more variations. You can switch up the color palette as well. I tended to keep it on “surprise me” just to see new ideas in colors I don’t normally pick.

6. It takes about 30 seconds or so to generate your design.

6. Once your room is generated, you can replace items (pink button) by following simple prompts or revise the color palette, etc. I was able to add in a fireplace and bookshelves or an extra chair by using “item replace.”

7. Scrolling right a bit, you can continue to revise the image with a new wall color or flooring.
This was just my initial experience with this app. I haven’t even got to my dated kitchen, bathrooms, or exterior landscaping. It’s just the tip of the iceberg! Which is your favorite style?
