Last week I planted an orchid in a palm tree. It’s so pretty and vibrant. The idea is that it wraps its roots around the palm. The previous home owner at our last house planted several and I loved them so much I wanted to try it at our new house!
This is probably more like an experiment than a tutorial, but I’ll come back and update!

Supplies
- Orchid
- Sphagnum moss
- Orchid fertilizer
- Twine

Directions
- Dampen the moss and add a large handful to the bottom of the orchid roots.
- Nestle the orchid and moss into the palm.
- Tie twine around to hold it in place until the roots can wrap around the tree.
- Spray roots with fertilizer.

Gorgeous! I just did two in my palms that look just like this. Any tips for keeping them happy?
Oh that’s a great idea to use palms. I’m trying to remember to fertilize and mist with water occasionally during the dry season. The orchid is still doing well, but not as good as if it were in a pot though. I’m hoping that the summer rainy season will help :)
Hi Kate, any updates on the orchid on the palm?
I’m sad to report it’s not doing so great. First of all, I think it gets to much sun, and secondly I pay very little attention to it just because I don’t think about it — furthering my reputation as a mediocre plant mom :)
I think you will have more success if you plant on a smoother palm tree. I have tried them in that type of palm and the problem is the roots don’t attached to the tree as well.
I have tried this, but on a slightly smoother part of the palm tree. The leaves are turning colors, any idea what the problem could be?
Hi Diane. I hate to say my little orchid didn’t make it! I’m not sure why either. I’m wondering if it was too sunny in that spot. Sorry I’m no help!
