Updated girl’s room with mural and macramé wall

I haven’t shared Clara’s room for awhile here, so I thought I’d show you some fun touches I’ve added! I hung a large macramé curtain behind a mirror over her desk, some gold star decals on the ceiling and even some new artwork.

Last week we did virtual learning with all three kids at home and it was CRAZY! I set up workstations in the kids’ rooms so they could focus and spent my days perpetually walking back and forth from room to room finding websites, entering Webex “classrooms” and finding the right worksheets.

These teachers are amazing! If you are my teacher, you have all my respect and I’m praying for you. Thank you for all you do!!

The wall behind her desk looked so bare and boring next to the mural! I wanted to add texture, but not compete with the chinoiserie wallpaper, so this large macramé curtain was perfect.

The rattan peacock mirror was a fun touch too. I love adding in wood tones to warm up spaces. (I still need a cushion for that rattan chair!)

This bright pink, small-scale chair was at a kid’s consignment shop and Clara talked me into getting it! It was only $25 and so cute, I couldn’t say no.

It’s fun to see rooms evolve over the years as we change and add details. I have always loved stars and these gold star decals were perfect for her low ceiling.

This capiz light fixture is so pretty and also works well with low ceilings. I actually think I want to buy two more of these I like it so much — one for the laundry room and one for the hallway in my own room!

Can you spot Clara somewhere in picture as I put up the stars? haha!

Of course the star of the room is this green garden mural. It has to be my favorite wallpaper of all time.

I framed the mural because it didn’t take up the whole wall. Now that I’m looking at these pictures, I think I will paint the spaces on the sides the same green color.

I get asked a lot on Instagram what green color that is and I’m afraid I don’t know! I took a piece of the paper into Home Depot and had it matched.

And this is the DIY rug pillow I showed you last week! I turned this $10 BATH MAT into a pillow in just 10 minutes.

I keep adding little pieces to this side of the room. My late grandmother embroidered the two pieces on the right. I found that unicorn head on clearance for $5 at Target (which led to too many jokes from Marcello asking me if I was the Godfather and the boys calling Clara a unicorn killer …).

We use the accordion hooks for dresses, which is easier for her than hangers and prevents just a few more things from ending up on the floor!

If you look carefully, you can see that the small macramé tapestry covers an intercom. We actually still use our intercom for radio music! She turns hers up way too loud.

On the sweetest note, these lyrics are from the famous hymn “Come Thou Fount,” which I still sing to Clara almost every night. I’m sure to cry every time I hear it.

Girls closet organization

Here is how I have her closet organized at the moment. With her favorite dresses on the accordion hook, we have more space for this Barbie house I found my the side of the road and made over!

And here is how I stripped that dresser I found for $30 and applied liming wax.

painting an interior door green

And finally, we painted her door the same green as the mural! I plan on doing a post on this in the near future, but for now: I painted the door with bonding primer and then with semi-gloss latex paint. It adds such a dramatic pop. I have so many doors I’d like to paint now!

Hope you enjoyed our little tour! Her small room is proof that you don’t need a lot of space to have boatloads of personality. You can do anything with four walls!

  1. Hi Kate, I came to the computer to listen on-line to my favorite Gospel songs, noticed your email and could not resist first peeking, oh my goodness! Clara’s room is a dream. All the little things compliment something big. The basket on top of the bookshelf, those pink threads match the gorgeous chair. I took forever to browse and I loved it all. Amazing what you did. I am sure Clara is enjoying Mother’s handy work :). I smiled broadly about the unicorns head. I also noticed the pink cushion on the bed compliments those pink flowers on the mural. Oh I could go on for quite a bit, again, the room is lovely. I knew the house was not going to be just white walls, the introduction of color is fabulous. Now I am off to listen to Gospel, I so love praise and worship, it takes me to another level. God bless you all and protect you all. I will finish off tomorrow D.V. Kindest regards.
